I was ordained a rabbi after five years of postgraduate study. I was lifted to the status of rebbe after twenty years of contemplative practice. I was graced with being a zayde (grandfather) with the birth of my grandson, Jack. Of the three titles, it is the third I value the most. A rabbi is a master of texts; a rebbe is a master of textures; a zayde is a master of nothing who can’t get over the fact that babies babble, sit, shit, and smile. A rabbi needs chaverim (friends with whom to study); a rebbe needs hasidim (disciples to teach); a zayde needs a grandchild with whom to play. Of the three the zayde is the more subversive.
